Preparation Tips for WAEC 2023 Health Science Practical Exam
To give you an idea of the types of questions that could be included in a Health Science Practical exam, here are a few examples:
Question 1:.
Examine the given blood sample and identify the blood type. Record your observations and explain the procedure you would use to determine the blood type accurately.
Answer 1:
Observations: The blood sample agglutinated when mixed with anti-A and anti-B serums but did not agglutinate with anti-D serum.
Procedure for determining blood type:
- Obtain three separate small test tubes.
- Add a drop of the blood sample to each test tube.
- In the first test tube, add a drop of anti-A serum and observe for agglutination.
- Repeat step 3 with anti-B serum in the second test tube and anti-D serum in the third test tube.
- Note the agglutination reactions observed in each test tube.
- Based on the reactions, determine the blood type.
Question 2:
A patient complains of abdominal pain and exhibits symptoms of appendicitis. Demonstrate how to perform the rebound tenderness test to confirm the diagnosis.
Answer 2:
Procedure for the rebound tenderness test:
Position the patient comfortably on the examination table, lying flat on their back.
Stand on the patient's right side and locate the McBurney's point, which is approximately two-thirds of the distance from the umbilicus to the anterior superior iliac spine.
Apply gentle pressure to the McBurney's point with your fingertips and note any tenderness or discomfort expressed by the patient.
Quickly release the pressure and observe the patient's reaction.
If the patient experiences more pain upon the release of pressure, it indicates a positive rebound tenderness, which suggests possible appendicitis.
Please keep in mind that these examples are for illustrative purposes only and may not reflect the exact questions that will appear in the actual 2023 WAEC Health Science Practical exam.
